Google has added real-time traffic data for several major cities to its mapping service, the company said Wednesday.
The traffic information is integrated with Google Maps and is available in more than 30 American cities, including San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago and New York.
The data is provided for major highways and is color-coded to signify traffic conditions: green means no congestion; yellow is for minor holdups; and red means significant slowdowns.
According to Google product manager Carl Sjogreen, the data is aggregated from several sources, including road sensors, as well as car and taxi fleets.
As a result, Sjogreen said, there is sometimes not enough data to report road conditions. In that case, the roads appear gray.

The guys over at winhistory.de managed to get their Windows XP Professional running on a very minimal box: an Intel Pentium clocked down to 8 MHz with 20 MB of RAM. (The installer won’t work with less than 64 MB, but after installing you can remove memory.) The link has plenty of pictures of their progress in achieving this dubious milestone. They deserve a Golden Hourglass award for ‘extreme waste of time.’ What obscure hardware configurations have you managed to get Windows running on?

Microsoft has committed large resources into educating people on the illegal use of software and how it harms the industry since the launch of Windows 95. But a member over at Bink.nu has spotted an error with the latest update for the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool on Dutch versions of Windows XP, it comes with a significant typo that could be taken the wrong way.
As the pic shows for our Dutch readers it says “Laat mij enkele voordelen zien van het gebruik van illegal software als ik op voltooien klik” which when translated to English reads “Shows me some advantages of using illegal software when I click Finish” The link points to the Windows Genuine Advantage site which does anything but endorse the use of illegal software, doh!
Someone’s having a laugh! Granted typos happen but one as significant as this will probably prompt an immediate/within a day or two update from Microsoft to rectify the error.

Microsoft has been quietly testing a new “pay-as-you-go” software rental service in South Africa, Mexico and Romania. The service allows users to pay a monthly fee of around $15 for the use of Office 2003 – according to Microsoft, the program offers customers “the opportunity to obtain genuine Microsoft Office 2003 at a low upfront price, along with the flexibility to pay over time and renew when they choose.” Still, Microsoft is being careful to emphasize that the Office 2003 rental program is merely a trial to judge public reaction. According to the spokesperson, Microsoft is currently “reviewing feedback from the trial in order to determine whether to extend it” and said it is “too early to speculate” about exactly what form this will take.
Last year, the software giant started a project called FlexGo, where customers purchased a whole computer preloaded with Windows XP and other Microsoft software for a discount price, then used prepaid cards to continue using the PC. The program met with some success when it was first tried in Brazil: 31% said they would not have made the purchased at all had the program not been available. Microsoft’s Software Assurance program, where users pay a yearly fee in order to always get the most up-to-date version of Microsoft products, could also be considered a software rental program. The traditional model of software sales is unlikely to disappear, but I wouldn’t be surprised if more options, including “renting” software, become available internationally. Either way, Microsoft’s rental program may very easily turn out to be a success in countries where, because of poverty contrasting with high software prices, piracy is currently the only option.
