Mozilla releases Thunderbird 2

A new find-as-you-type feature in the free e-mail client winnows displayed messages on the fly, making searches faster.

Mozilla released Thunderbird 2, its free, open source e-mail client for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems in 30 languages.

The new release boasts improved security and a variety of new features. Chief among them is message tagging, the ability to label and categorise e-mail for easier searching and organisation. In addition to default tags, users can create their own.Thunderbird 2 also features message history navigation, similar in concept to the browser history feature in Firefox.

Google Desktop for Mac Out the Door

Google on Wednesday will introduce Google Desktop for the Mac (direct download), a new “Universal” application that indexes the contents of a Mac’s hard drive, including applications, files, PDFs, and Web histories from Safari, Firefox, and Camino. The application, which will be released as a beta, will support Spotlight plug-ins and leverage Spotlight privacy features to prevent some documents from being searched. Google Desktop for Mac launches using the Command key (double-tap) and features “live search” that displays the last 10 results instantly, including the file name, a brief description, and highlighted search term. In addition, users can view other extended results in a Google-like webpage in the default browser.

The application includes a new Google application that enables users to stay up-to-date and download other Mac applications from the company. It also integrates with Google’s Web search, offering both the ability to search the local desktop from Google.com (option can be turned off) or find more results from local search on the Web as well as user’s Gmail account.

New Mozilla Mobile Browser Out

The newest version of Minimo, the Mozilla mobile browser, became available this week in the midst of changes within the Minimo project that make its future uncertain.Minimo 0.2, available for free download, is compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 and is smaller and faster than previous versions, according to early users who posted comments to the blog about the browser. Minimo is designed to be an alternative to the browser that comes with Windows Mobile and its creators promote its speed in accessing sites and other features such as tabs, better security and support for widgets.

The Minimo project, which isn’t a Mozilla Corp. endeavor but is hosted by Mozilla.org, was one of the earliest third-party mobile browser initiatives but seems to have been eclipsed by other developers, including Opera Software ASA.
But while Minimo struggles, Opera, which also offers a free browser for phones including those running the newest OS from Microsoft, Windows Mobile 6.0, has been attracting more and more users. In February, there were 216,283 downloads of Opera’s browser for Windows Mobile Smartphone and Pocket PC editions.

Windows DreamScene Content Pack

Even though DreamScene is still technically a preview release, Microsoft has just posted a little Content Pack featuring 4 new animated backgrounds.

The four videos are:

A field of thistle, with a bee gathering pollen
The rushing water of a forest stream
A streetlamp reflected in a puddle, with softly falling rain
Orange wisps flowing in a computer-generated scene

We’re offering these video backgrounds only to users who have installed the Windows DreamScene Preview. However, the Content Pack will continue to be available when the final version of DreamScene is released, so don’t worry about installing the preview just so you can obtain them. The preview version is an unsupported release; it is not appropriate for users who are uncomfortable with installing prerelease software. If you’ve installed the Windows DreamScene Preview, click Check for updates in Windows Update to see the Content Pack, which is offered as an Ultimate Extra.
