If you want, Google happily tracks your every online move

Google’s latest project is called Web History, and it offers registered Google Account users a chance to peruse not just their account history with Google, but one’s surfing history. “Imagine being able to search over the full text of pages you’ve visited online and finding that one particular quote you remember reading somewhere months ago,” explains Google’s Payam Shodjai, product manager for Personalization. “Imagine always knowing exactly where you saw something online, like that priceless YouTube video of your friend attempting to perform dance moves from a bygone age. Better yet, imagine having this wealth of information work for you to make searching for new information easier and faster.”

The data is available only when the user logs on with a Google account and password, the same account used for other Google services such as Gmail. In order to track web surfing information, the user must have the Google Toolbar installed in their web browser, and have PageRank enabled. The Web History feature can be turned off and on as you like.

Google buys DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion.

Google agreed to its largest acquisition yesterday, reaching a deal to purchase DoubleClick, the online advertising company, from two private equity firms for $3.1 billion in cash, almost double what it paid for YouTube last year. And perhaps just as important, the deal kept DoubleClick from the hands of Microsoft.

For Google, the purchase is another step in its transformation from a search engine into an advertising powerhouse. DoubleClick, which is based in New York City, specializes in software for display advertising and has close relationships with Web publishers, advertisers and advertising agencies.

YouTube has launched a new section on their service named CitizenTube. Apparently, this is the first time the company has hired professional editors to develop a special section on the service.

CitizenTube is basically a new YouTube channel where they are featuring unique political content. The section would display interesting relevant videos hosted on the service itself.

The section is being managed by Steve Grove who has been named the YouTube’s News and Political Editor.

Google Desktop for Mac Out the Door

Google on Wednesday will introduce Google Desktop for the Mac (direct download), a new “Universal” application that indexes the contents of a Mac’s hard drive, including applications, files, PDFs, and Web histories from Safari, Firefox, and Camino. The application, which will be released as a beta, will support Spotlight plug-ins and leverage Spotlight privacy features to prevent some documents from being searched. Google Desktop for Mac launches using the Command key (double-tap) and features “live search” that displays the last 10 results instantly, including the file name, a brief description, and highlighted search term. In addition, users can view other extended results in a Google-like webpage in the default browser.

The application includes a new Google application that enables users to stay up-to-date and download other Mac applications from the company. It also integrates with Google’s Web search, offering both the ability to search the local desktop from Google.com (option can be turned off) or find more results from local search on the Web as well as user’s Gmail account.

Gmail to offer Infinity Plus One of storage

Google announced yesterday that soon customers of their Gmail service will have their storage size increased to “infinity plus one.”  The announcement comes shortly after Yahoo’s announcement that their Yahoo mail customers would be given unlimited storage.

Greg Tomkins, an engineer at Google, is credited with coming up with the “infinity plus one” idea.  “I was out in the yard when my kids ran up to me yelling at each other.  My son said to my daughter, ‘I hate you to infinity.’ She replied, ‘I hate you to infinity plus one.’  And right then I knew I had the solution to competing with unlimited storage.”

YouTube new remixing and real-time chat

YouTube went offline last night for updating. Added features include the capability to customize the colors and content on your personal profile page, and a new Google Labs-like feature, TestTube, where you can experiment with new YouTube features. For example, TestTube has the new Audio Swap feature, which lets you replace your video’s audio with a music track from one of several artists that YouTube has made arrangements with. The major snag with this feature is that it completely overwrites your video’s audio track. For that, you’d need a more full-featured video editor, which Google/YouTube doesn’t yet offer. Also new: Streams. These are fancy video channels with chat rooms attached. Users can add videos to a stream (that the stream moderator can later remove) and chat about what they’re watching. There are some other snags in the system: I couldn’t switch videos in a stream easily. Lycos and Stickam also have video-based chat rooms, but YouTube’s Streams should ultimately be better, because it’s so easy to add a video from the enormous YouTube library to a stream, and then begin chatting about it.(VIA Joost Team) Source: www.webware.com
