$10000 Mac bug can hack Windows too

It turns out that the vulnerability isn’t in Apple’s Safari web browser after all, but in the interaction between QuickTime and Java.

That’s not an academic issue, as it means that using an alternative browser such as Firefox gives no protection against the exploit. While we are waiting for a fix from Apple, disabling Java in whichever browser you favour seems to be a reasonable precaution. If you need to use a web site that requires Java, decide whether you trust the site before turning it back on, and don’t forget to disable it again when you’ve finished.

The other point is that QuickTime is also installed on a lot of Windows PCs. So it seems likely that the bad quys are trying very hard to replicate Dino Dai Zovi’s work, and they’ll now be looking very closely at QuickTime and Java, especially on Windows.

Microsoft has never made much secret of the fact that keeping rival browsers down is a key part of its business plan.

Way back in 1996, Steve Ballmer (then still only the deputy CEO) cheerfully proclaimed: “Every minute of every day, we’ll ask every Microsoft employee to ask themselves, ‘Have I done anything to increase our share of the Internet browser market?’ That’s the business we’re in; driving up our share is incredibly, incredibly important to us.”

Microsoft Selling Windows XP, Office Suite to Schools for $3

Microsoft said it will build on existing efforts to bridge the digital divide worldwide and announced several new ventures, including a $3 software package for governments that subsidize student computers.

The software maker said it will sell a Student Innovation Suite,which includes Windows XP Starter Edition and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, for $3 to governments that subsidize a certain percentage of the cost of PCs for primary and secondary students for use at home and at school, starting in the second half.

Microsoft Brings Windows Live Messenger to TV Screen, Through Xbox 360.

Microsoft planned to announced that it will make its Windows Live Messenger service available on its Xbox 360 game consoles, bringing instant messaging from the computer to the television.

The move was meant to help Microsoft stay ahead of Sony, its chief rival in the electronic games business, in delivering the richest online experience for game players. It is also an element of Microsoft’s overall strategy to connect people across PCs, televisions and mobile devices like cellphones.

Windows XP to be retired in 2008

Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.

All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

Hutch ties up with Microsoft for live mobile search

Hutch has partnered with Microsoft to offer live search for its mobile customers. The private Telco would provide the entire Windows live suite of services to its customers over a period of time.

As a result, Indian mobile internet users for the first time have optimized access to mobile search engine that returns relevant results quickly.

Microsoft said that their Live search engine would offer mobile users ability to search for content like Tones, Images, Videos and Games. This search would offer optimized searching on PlanetHutch as well.

How to Control Remote Desktops through a Web Browser

Remote Desktop is a feature in Windows XP that allows you to control a remote computer and see the screen as if you were sitting behind that computer. Usually, you would use a special client application to connect to the remote computer. By default, Windows XP setup installs such an application: Remote Desktop Connection.

You can also access the remote computer without another application, using instead your Web browser. However, before you can do this, you must first install certain components on the remote computer.

Microsoft releases “Deepfish” browser for Windows Mobile

Forget Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile, Microsoft has borrowed technology from Sea Dragon, the imaging engine behind Photosynth, and has released a new web browser dubbed DeepFish. The idea behind Deepfish is giving the user the ability to view websites on their mobile phone just as they would view them on a desktop or laptop.
