It turns out that the vulnerability isn’t in Apple’s Safari web browser after all, but in the interaction between QuickTime and Java.
That’s not an academic issue, as it means that using an alternative browser such as Firefox gives no protection against the exploit. While we are waiting for a fix from Apple, disabling Java in whichever browser you favour seems to be a reasonable precaution. If you need to use a web site that requires Java, decide whether you trust the site before turning it back on, and don’t forget to disable it again when you’ve finished.
The other point is that QuickTime is also installed on a lot of Windows PCs. So it seems likely that the bad quys are trying very hard to replicate Dino Dai Zovi’s work, and they’ll now be looking very closely at QuickTime and Java, especially on Windows.
Even a Mac can be hacked. This was proven Friday by Shane Macaulay who managed to break into a Mac in a contest at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver.
Macaulay, a software engineer, got help from his friend Dino Di Zovie, a security researcher, found a hole in the Mac browser Safari which could be exploited to allow remote unauthorized entry and gain full control of the computer.
For his efforts, Macaulay won $10,000 in the contest dubbed “PWN to OWN”. Initially, the organizers of the conference offered to give a way a Mac to anyone who could break into the computer using a wireless access point while the computer was not running any program.
Google on Wednesday will introduce Google Desktop for the Mac (direct download), a new “Universal” application that indexes the contents of a Mac’s hard drive, including applications, files, PDFs, and Web histories from Safari, Firefox, and Camino. The application, which will be released as a beta, will support Spotlight plug-ins and leverage Spotlight privacy features to prevent some documents from being searched. Google Desktop for Mac launches using the Command key (double-tap) and features “live search” that displays the last 10 results instantly, including the file name, a brief description, and highlighted search term. In addition, users can view other extended results in a Google-like webpage in the default browser.
The application includes a new Google application that enables users to stay up-to-date and download other Mac applications from the company. It also integrates with Google’s Web search, offering both the ability to search the local desktop from Google.com (option can be turned off) or find more results from local search on the Web as well as user’s Gmail account.
Nike said last week that it plans to make its entire line of running shoes compatible with Apple Inc’s iPod nano line by the end of this year.
The comment was made Nike president and chief executive Mark Parker on Thursday as the shoe maker released its third-quarter results, saying it had a soft year with some specialty mall retailers.
The segment overall was down, according to Boston.com, with some companies like Foot Locker Inc. and Finish Line Inc. suffering from slumping sales. Nike, however, said it is poised to make major changes in retail this year with the help of leading retail partners that will build strength. [full story]

A report from wireless industry analyst firm ABI Research released today proclaims that the new Apple iPhone does not fall within the firm’s standard definition of a smartphone, due to restrictions Apple has placed on the phone against the inclusion of third-party applications.
By ABI’s definition, a smartphone is “a cellular handset using an open, commercial operating system that supports third-party applications.” Apple’s announcement two weeks ago that its iPhone would run OS X – essentially an adaptation of its Macintosh edition of Unix – led many to believe the iPhone could open up a world of possibilities for consumer-conceived functionality.
But then in an interview with Newsweek’s Steven Levy, Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated emphatically that despite its OS X roots, the Apple iPhone would be closed to third-party apps, remarking, “You don’t want your phone to be an open platform…Cingular doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.”Continue reading ‘Apple IPhone Not a Smartphone’
