India To Offer Free Broadband by 2009

The Government of India is planning to introduce free 2 mbps broadband for all residents of the Indian subcontinent by 2009. The expected service shall be launched by the government owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL. Quoting from the article: ‘The government proposes to offer all citizens of India free, high-speed broadband connectivity by 2009, through the state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL. While consumers would cheer, the move holds the potential to kill the telecom business as we know it.

$10000 Mac bug can hack Windows too

It turns out that the vulnerability isn’t in Apple’s Safari web browser after all, but in the interaction between QuickTime and Java.

That’s not an academic issue, as it means that using an alternative browser such as Firefox gives no protection against the exploit. While we are waiting for a fix from Apple, disabling Java in whichever browser you favour seems to be a reasonable precaution. If you need to use a web site that requires Java, decide whether you trust the site before turning it back on, and don’t forget to disable it again when you’ve finished.

The other point is that QuickTime is also installed on a lot of Windows PCs. So it seems likely that the bad quys are trying very hard to replicate Dino Dai Zovi’s work, and they’ll now be looking very closely at QuickTime and Java, especially on Windows.

Yahoo music section adds about 400000 songs

Yahoo is expanding its online music section to include the lyrics of 400,000 songs, hoping to strike a chord with Web surfers looking for a more reliable alternative to Internet sites that publish the words without the permission of the copyright owners.

Song lyrics have been available through scores of other websites for years, but most of those destinations are technically breaking the law by posting the words without the approval of the publishers and writers that own the rights.

What’s more, many of these unauthorized lyric sites rely on contributions from outsiders, a communal approach that increases the chances for inaccuracies.

Google buys Marratech video conferencing company

One day after announcing record breaking profits for yet another quarter, Google put some of that cash to work, acquiring video-conferencing software from Swedish company Marratech AB.

Marratech’s video-conferencing software is based on research that began in 1995 at the Centre for Distance-Spanning Technology (CDT) at Lulea university of Technology, Sweden. The software employs a interactive whiteboard and application sharing and works on PCs running Mac, Linux or Windows, according to Marratech’s Web site.

Google buys DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion.

Google agreed to its largest acquisition yesterday, reaching a deal to purchase DoubleClick, the online advertising company, from two private equity firms for $3.1 billion in cash, almost double what it paid for YouTube last year. And perhaps just as important, the deal kept DoubleClick from the hands of Microsoft.

For Google, the purchase is another step in its transformation from a search engine into an advertising powerhouse. DoubleClick, which is based in New York City, specializes in software for display advertising and has close relationships with Web publishers, advertisers and advertising agencies.

Yahoo Releases Alpha, A New Customizable Ajax Search engine

Yahoo has released a beta version of an Ajax-based search service dubbed “Alpha.” Alpha integrates normal web search results with other search “modules.” Alpha’s default modules include searches of other Yahoo offerings like Flickr, Yahoo News and Yahoo Answers as well as YouTube and Wikipedia.

If you login to a Yahoo account, Alpha can be customized to use any search module you’d like to create. I tried to create a Wired search module but I couldn’t get it to work. However, Alpha had no trouble creating modules to search the BBC and NPR.

YouTube launches CitizenTube

YouTube has launched a new section on their service named CitizenTube. Apparently, this is the first time the company has hired professional editors to develop a special section on the service.

CitizenTube is basically a new YouTube channel where they are featuring unique political content. The section would display interesting relevant videos hosted on the service itself.

The section is being managed by Steve Grove who has been named the YouTube’s News and Political Editor.

New Mozilla Mobile Browser Out

The newest version of Minimo, the Mozilla mobile browser, became available this week in the midst of changes within the Minimo project that make its future uncertain.Minimo 0.2, available for free download, is compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 and is smaller and faster than previous versions, according to early users who posted comments to the blog about the browser. Minimo is designed to be an alternative to the browser that comes with Windows Mobile and its creators promote its speed in accessing sites and other features such as tabs, better security and support for widgets.

The Minimo project, which isn’t a Mozilla Corp. endeavor but is hosted by Mozilla.org, was one of the earliest third-party mobile browser initiatives but seems to have been eclipsed by other developers, including Opera Software ASA.
But while Minimo struggles, Opera, which also offers a free browser for phones including those running the newest OS from Microsoft, Windows Mobile 6.0, has been attracting more and more users. In February, there were 216,283 downloads of Opera’s browser for Windows Mobile Smartphone and Pocket PC editions.
