MySpace, in partnership with Vertigo Films and Film4, is offering its users over £1m to make the world’s first user-generated feature film.
The MyMovie Mashup competition unfolds in 10 ‘acts’. The first part of the competition is the search for a director, and interested parties must submit a short film to MySpace by 27 April.

Looking for something more fun and less predictable than roses and chocolates this Valentine’s Day? Write your love on the side of a satellite. This unusual approach to courting comes courtesy of students at MIT and Georgia Tech, as part of a larger initiative to pay for their research spacecraft, the Mars Gravity Biosatellite. For a tax-deductible donation anyone can post a picture or message of choice on the spacecraft. All donations help the students pay for the development and construction of their Earth-orbiting satellite, to be launched in 2010. The data gathered will be critical to preparing for human missions to Mars and beyond.[ link ]

If you’re the owner of a video rental store, it may be time to start thinking about getting into a different business, according to ZDNet. Netflix, the online movie rental service, is offering a new feature that allows its subscribers to instantly view movies and TV shows on their PC. From the article: ‘Following a one-time, under-60-second installation of a simple browser applet, most subscribers’ movie selections will begin playing in their Web browser in as little as 10 to 15 seconds. Movies can be paused and a position bar gives viewers the ability to immediately jump to any point in the movie. In all, the instant watching feature requires only Internet connectivity with a minimum of one megabit per second of bandwidth.’ These movies are in addition to the standard DVDs you can have at home, it should be pointed out. You can see
a demonstration of the service at the Hacking Netflix blog.
Only a small percentage of customers have it available at the moment, but they hope to roll it out to everyone within six months.

Finally there is an innovative answer that not only provides a practical solution to book storage but is guaranteed to get people talking.
Sticklebook has invented the world’s first invisible shelving system that creates the illusion of a line of books hanging unsupported on the wall. It can be used absolutely anywhere and for any situation.
Sticklebook’s innovative design is comprised of an aluminium extrusion which acts as a bracket and polypropylene combed strip that grips the cover and pages of paperback books. The shelf is screwed onto the wall which itself helps support the weight of the book and is an integral part of the design. They claim it is totally secure and fall-proof. Product page.

Google users can now buy domain names through the search engine giant, to use with its growing suite of online applications.
For $US10 a year, Google sells web addresses ending in .com, .org, .net, .biz, and .info. The domain names are for use with Google Apps for Your Domain, a free hosting service targeted at small businesses. It offers websites, email, instant messaging and shared calendars - all personalised with the business’ name and logo. Users will retain full control of their domain settings, allowing them to use the domain with non-Google services.
Google has partnered with GoDaddy.com and eNom for domain registration services, but the registration process has been integrated in the Google Apps for Your Domain set up process. According to Google, the process includes “private registration to protect your personal information”.
