New Mozilla Mobile Browser Out

The newest version of Minimo, the Mozilla mobile browser, became available this week in the midst of changes within the Minimo project that make its future uncertain.Minimo 0.2, available for free download, is compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 and is smaller and faster than previous versions, according to early users who posted comments to the blog about the browser. Minimo is designed to be an alternative to the browser that comes with Windows Mobile and its creators promote its speed in accessing sites and other features such as tabs, better security and support for widgets.

The Minimo project, which isn’t a Mozilla Corp. endeavor but is hosted by Mozilla.org, was one of the earliest third-party mobile browser initiatives but seems to have been eclipsed by other developers, including Opera Software ASA.
But while Minimo struggles, Opera, which also offers a free browser for phones including those running the newest OS from Microsoft, Windows Mobile 6.0, has been attracting more and more users. In February, there were 216,283 downloads of Opera’s browser for Windows Mobile Smartphone and Pocket PC editions.

Ultimate List of Open Source content management systems (CMS)

A content management system is a computer software system for organising and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. A content management system is often a web application used for creating and managing websites and web content. Alternatively, content management systems (CMS) can also be used for storing and publishing documentation such as operators’ manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, etc. There are many open-source and proprietary CMS solutions available, which is in fact true for most systems of any kind. The market for content management systems is quite fragmented.

Over 2 million Firefox 2 downloads in first 24 hours

Firefox developer Mike Beltzner blogs about the success of Firefox 2’s launch, with had over 2 million downloads in the first 24 hours of Tuesday’s release and a peak download rate of more than 30 downloads per second. That’s some serious bandwidth. Beltzner also looks back on Firefox’s success and discusses why the browser has been so popular.

Apparently, people loves them some Firefox. Within 24 hours of the official launch on Tuesday, there were over 2 million people using Firefox 2, and we were seeing a peak rate of more than 30 downloads per second from our website.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the things that make Firefox popular. It’s obviously more than the sum of our features, since there are other browsers that include more features in the default install. We’ve known that for a while, though. The popularity of Firefox compared to Mozilla Suite (Seamonkey) clearly proved that the design maxim of “less is more” applies to more than just interior decorating. However, people do love their pet features, so I don’t think that being a small-footprint, tightly-focused browser is the only thing that drives Firefox’s popularity. Download Firefox 2.0 RC 1

Firefox 2 (Bon Echo) RC1 is available for public download; however, Mozilla still recommends that only developers use the new build. The next scheduled release, Firefox 2 RC2, will be in the first week of October, with a final release expected by the end of the month. From what we’ve seen so far, Firefox 2 looks to be a sure winner.

New theme
It’s subtle, but it’s there. The RC1 toolbar has an almost glass-like look, with the traditional buttons Firefox users have grown used to appearing translucent until you hover your mouse near them, and they fill in. This gives the buttons a shine, as though they are glowing.  Continue reading ‘Download Firefox 2.0 RC 1′
